Ewer in 925 mil silver

Ewer in 925 mil silver by Edouard & John Barnard. Ovoid-shaped model with a round pedestal, engraved decoration with palmettes and medallions, represented by an antique young woman, one at her toilet and the other carried by Mercury. A snake forming a natural handle is wrapped around the body and neck, chasing a butterfly resting on the hinged fretel lid.

 

The third numbered medallion: "this jug forms part of a presentation valued at £ 300 from his patients to Professor J. SENTON REID, MD BELFAST 1866". English goldsmith's hallmarks, city and date. Diamond pattern registration punch under the Victorian era used between 1842-1883.
