Jean-Victor Bertin was born in Paris in 1767 and died in the same city in 1862. He was a student of Pierre Henri de Valenciennes. In 1785 he entered the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture where he was a student of Gabriel-François Doyen. He quickly obtained beautiful chests of drawers for the Trianon and the Château de Fontainebleau, and numerous commissions from collectors.
He undertook long trips to Italy which of course influenced his landscapes in the antique style.
