MAILLAUD Fernand Born December 12, 1862 / Died August 30, 1948. Landscape painter, decorator. After a rural childhood, Fernand Maillaud enrolled in the Paris studios of Humbert and Wallet. From 1891, Fernand MAILLAUD exhibited at the Salon as part of the synthetic group formed by Guauguin. He misses his childhood landscapes, so he spends his summers in Fresselines, Creuse, painting everyday scenes and field work. Fernand MAILLAUD made furniture for a living, and his wife embroidered, which gave them the idea of setting up a workshop in Issoudin; their tapestries were exhibited at the Salon. But Fernand MAILLAUD's great passion remains nature and the rural world. He uses an impressionist technique, retaining only the essential, and paints traditional themes of the land, fairs, markets and everyday events in their rustic simplicity. In 1924, Fernand MAILLAUD settled in Guéret, visiting Creuse and Corrèze, but spending his winters in Provence, Spain, Algeria and Morocco, where he brought back landscapes of Bedouins whose attitudes resemble those of the Creusois peasants. Fernand MAILLAUD exhibits at various Salons, with Georges Petit, Durand-Ruel, Bernheim Jeune, Devambez, and takes part in several major international events. Despite his successes, Fernand MAILLAUD will always remain the painter of his land, which he exploits with love.
